The next big thing… just passed.

Have you been living under a rock the past few months? Even years? Then maybe you haven’t heard of the most recent craze of THE HUNGER GAMES.

The final installment of this series by Suzanne Collins just came out yesterday and twitter was raging with people procuring their copies and neglecting their responsibilities to read it. Those who read it are biting their tongues to talk about it now… Thankfully unwilling to spoil the ending for those of us who haven’t jumped ship yet.

Now the dying question… Is the series that good?

When a craze like this (or Harry Potter, Twilight, etc) comes into the limelight how does it make you feel to be on the outside? Do you rush out and buy the books just because everyone else has? Or do you take your time and finish the 40 books on your waiting list?

I am tempted… very tempted to bump Ms. Collins books to numero uno. Not because I want to be in the “IN” but because they are Young Adult and quite frankly if they are “that good” I want to see why, as a fellow writer. WHICH is excellent for Ms Collins sales. LOL… Me buying them just because. Crazy how it works that way.

The series explores timely topics like violence-as-entertainment and rule-by-intimidation. All VERY timely in my opinion.

Anyhow, if you haven’t heard about them, here is the “back of the book” on all the books:

THE HUNGER GAMES: Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

CATCHING FIRE: Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

THE MOCKINGJAY: Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

So, will you read? Have you read? Are you waiting for your copy… inquiring minds want to know.

I read Mockingjay last night. I finished Hunger Games and Catching Fire in about 2.5 days back in February.

I love them. They are both in your face and subtle, with a main character who you root for but never truly understand until the very end. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a more complex protagonist in YA.

In our society, some people want to protect children from the horror that is war. Suzanne Collins thinks they should know, that it should horrify them…because in a few years, when it’s their turn to pull the triggers, maybe they’ll remember what it costs.

I recommend. Highly. You won’t be disappointed.

I tried out The Hunger Games for a cross-country flight. I loved it so much that by the time I arrived in LA I found the nearest bookstore and inhaled Catching Fire on the flight back. I am actually not enamored with the characters so much as I am intrigued by them-and ESPECIALLY by the writing. HOLY COW, an entire novel in present tense? Instantly the story moves more quickly and with a greater degree of intensity.
I’m just starting Mockingjay, can’t wait to finish!
